What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid or hydraulic fluid is what enables the vehicle to stop. Brake fluid is a non-compressible fluid. When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, you are moving this fluid through the line system and applying force to the brake pistons that are inside each brake caliper. These brake pistons are what apply a force that presses the brake pads (or shoes) to the brake discs (or drums), allowing your car to stop.

Without brake fluid, your vehicle loses its ability to come to a halt. That's why it's important to keep up on the maintenance of your brake system so that you don't run into problems using the brakes down the road. It is necessary to flush your old brake fluid out and replace it with new, as brake fluid corrodes over time from absorbing moisture in the air. Have more questions?
